Empathy vs. Sympathy

What is empathy and why does it matter for leaders and everyone in our often disconnected modern world? Simply put empathy is the connection we seek. Empathy can be a difficult if not a fully absent trait for many leaders as it requires … “feeling with people”.

I discovered this video and I love the simple and effective animation to explain the power of empathy. The teaching tool is using sympathy as a means to contrast empathy. By understanding what empathy is not, we learn what it is.

I love and will remember the line near the end of this video, “Rarely can a response make something better. What makes a difference is connection.” I invite you to watch this entertaining and educational short video below:
